    Core Competency #7: Direct Communication

    July 6, 2015
    7:00 PM - 8:15 PM EST

    *** 1.25 CCEUs ***

    “Saying what is so”…what’s so difficult about that? However, this core competency is often difficult for coaches, especially newer coaches. Perhaps you don’t want to be perceived as mean or you don’t want to step on your clients’ toes or you’re afraid you would be leading or giving advice. So, don’t be shy. If you’re having trouble with this one you’re in good company. Let’s examine it together and learn the positive power of it and how to do it. It is rather easy, once you get the hang of it…and…the effect is profound. Onward and forward with direct communication!

    About our Speaker: As a connoisseur of great coaching, Lynn Meinke, PCC is dedicated to enhancing each person’s coaching abilities by sharing her knowledge about the ICF Core Competencies. As a coaching educator with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of coaching education, she lives and breathes the core competencies. Lynn is on the faculty of the University of Texas at Dallas teaching group coaching methodologies and providing supervisory coaching and assessing in its Executive Coaching Program. She is also a senior faculty member at the Institute for Life Coach Training where she teaches foundational and advanced levels of coaching and provides mentoring, supervision and assessing.

    Co-creating Coaching Cultures:
    How Partnerships between Business Leaders & Coaches Can Make It Happen

    Friday, August 28, 2015 (1/2 Day Event)
    Registration Starts at 8:30 AM
    Program: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
    Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab
    11100 Johns Hopkins Rd, Laurel, MD 20723

    Presented by Susan Hahn & Company

    Coaching has gained significant momentum as a resource for workforce development. How organizations cultivate a coaching culture remains a major platform for dialogue and planning among business leaders and the coaching community. Who are the ‘authorities’ on what is working well and can be leveraged, and what innovations are coming? Not the theorists, but the users and practitioners, in other words, YOU.

    How do we build strong coaching cultures now and in the future? How will the practice of organizational coaching need to change and adapt to emerging business needs? How can we, together, influence and facilitate the change? Join us as we:

    • provide an overview of the latest research on what a thriving coaching culture is;
    • explore how emerging business needs will impact and change the profession of coaching;
    • define a framework for how businesses can build new, or modify existing coaching cultures; and
    • see what wants to emerge in terms of next steps, alliances, visioning, etc.

    This interactive session will build upon research conducted in 2014 jointly by the Human Capital Institute and the International Coach Federation, the findings of which are published under the title Creating Coaching Cultures.

    Participating business leaders and coaches will explore the present state of coaching in organizations, the challenge of establishing a coaching culture, how emerging business needs will shape what employers are looking for in coaching programs, and ways in which the profession of coaching will need to adapt to those needs.

    CCEUs will be afforded for this session.

    Personal Connection:
    The Science Behind the Art
    Presented by: Janet Baldwin-Anderson, PhD

    Thursday, September 10, 2015

    Location:

    How do we foster attunement and connection
    —within ourselves and in our relationships?

    How do we engage with our clients to create relationships
    that foster meaningful growth and change?

    Research has pointed to the quality of the coach-client relationship as a critical factor in promoting successful client outcomes. This session will highlight key research findings that reveal the science behind the art of personal connection with our clients. The interdisciplinary sciences of the brain, the mind, and relationships—known as interpersonal neurobiology—provide theoretical evidence in support of what we coaches already know: a safe, intimate, and trusting relationship requires us to form a personal sense of attunement not only with the client, but also with our self.

    In this highly-interactive and information-filled session, participants will:

    • learn key concepts from the science of personal connection (including functions surrounding the brain, mind, and distributed nervous system);
    • practice mindfulness to attune to the self and others; and
    • engage in partner exercises to evoke and apply the experience of attunement in coaching.

    The way you do anything is the way you do everything. That’s how experiential coaching works. We are proud to offer a practicum for ICF coaches featuring two high-octane coaching methods that can dramatically accelerate your clients’ personal and professional growth.

    A unique offering for coaches only. Join award-winning artist and certified Co-Active Coach Elisabeth Vismans CPCC, ACC and certified executive and Equus Coach Beth Herman at a private horse farm for painting exercises and equine-facilitated learning.

    Why painting…and horses? Both practices sidestep the logical mind to access the wordless wisdom of our senses and creative energy. Skilled coaching links the discoveries of the brush, paper, and round pen back to everyday life so we can make desired shifts.

    Subconscious painting creates a direct path to inner truth and gives a clear, honest image of the inner story. Because the images come from within, clients will be able to really get what’s holding them back and what changes will help them move forward.

    The horse is a gentle, 1,100 biofeedback machine that senses our energy, intentions, and even our thoughts, in the moment. Whenever we join their herd, horses assess our energy and then lead, follow, or leave us. Equus Coaching helps clients see their own leadership energy and play with new ways to engage others.

    • No prior knowledge of painting is required, and no prior horse experience needed! All exercises are done from the ground with safe horses. (No riding.)
    • Everyone will meet the horses, paint, and watch the Equus Coaching demos. A few will be coached in the round pen.

    Learning objectives

    1. Build empathy for your clients as you try new challenges, supported by specialized coaches.
    2. Practice mindful techniques to sidestep restless inner dialogue so you can fully see the rich feedback your world is giving you.
    3. At least 70% of human communication is wordless. Fine-tune your ability to perceive others’ unspoken emotions and thoughts.
    4. Relearn how to play without damaging self-judgment. Painters’ images tell their uncensored stories so they can write their “best-seller.”
    5. See—and shift—habitual patterns. You can almost see the client’s thoughts mirrored in their brushstrokes and in the responses of the horse. Your coaches will tie the client’s insights back to everyday challenges in life.

    Core Competency #11: Managing Progress and Accountability

    December 7, 2015
    7:00 PM - 8:15 PM EST

    *** 1.25 CCEUs ***

    Did you know that the word “accountability” is often disliked or hated by your clients? So why do so many coaches use it, as in the question, “How can I hold you accountable?” And, how do you manage progress over time? You’ll learn how to masterfully work with clients in a positive manner to do both while not having to use any of those words. And as a bonus, you’ll learn how to end each coaching meeting with an authentic and affirming personal message for each client without cheerleading!
